What is a sun smart school in NZ? 

Did you know there are about 500 Sun Smart schools in Ashburton? Well St Joseph’s is one of them, in Aotearoa. 

St Joseph’s is well known, where shade is an excellent option for sun protection. Having shade around the school is good, because students can use it for several purposes; including Education Outside, Kapa Haka, eating lunches and also just for sitting down and chill. 

 

Why is it important for schools in NZ to teach students how to be Sun smart?

It is important to teach students to be sun smart because the sun’s UV ( ultraviolet ) radiation is the cause of skin cancer, and the UV damage also causes Sunburn, tanning, premature ageing and eye damage. 

But the good new are that all UV damage can be avoided if you are sun smart

 

How many schools in NZ are sun smart?  

In Aotearoa, there are about 500 Sun smart schools. 

 

What behavior are sun smart schools trying to teach their students? 

Sun Smart schools are teaching their students to use sun hats, ( bucket hats, Broad-Brimmed ). To use broad-spectrum 30+ sunscreen

 

What must a sun smart school address to be accredited as a sun smart school? 

• Behavior – Use sun hats , clothing, broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen
• Environment – Working towards providing shade and encouraging its use 
• Curriculum – Education students about UV and sun protection
• Review – The schools sun protection policy is reviewed at least every three years. 

Slip, Slop , Slap and Wrap guidelines, what are these guidelines?  

– Slip into shade – Find a nice shady tree or a shade sail to slip into. Shade is one of the best and easiest ways to protect ourselves against UV radiation. 

  – Slip on clothing that covers your skin – A shirt long sleeves is ideal 

– Slap on a hat – Wide brimmed hats protect the face, neck and ears. 

– Slop on some sunscreen – Remember to apply 20 minutes before you go outdoors and reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. 

Wrap on sunglasses – Sunglasses can protect you from UV radiation

Shade structures are used for school playgrounds or sitting areas. 

The best shade structures materials are PVC and vinyl both work well for shades. As an option to wood that resists rot, mould, and stains, these materials have been gaining popularity. 

The availability of wood grain and textured finishes has increased, making them a more relaxed option for classic wooden shades.

Today we read a poem about ” I have dreams ” and we had to do a Magazine cover about it.

This poem read down is a negative message about the person not having hope or dreams, but if you read it from the end, it’s different. Try it out yourself

Today two students taught us a Te Reo lesson and this is what they wanted to do, we also played a game of 21 in Maori.

 

 

At Tech this is what our classroom looks like with Miss Smallwood. We had to a doc about the 10 rules while inside the science lab. This is what the class room looks like and what our rules are.

Introduction Lesson 2 -Working in the Laboratory

Basic Safety Rules

1. Chemical Use { If you have used too much chemical do not put chemical back into the original bottle } A2. { If you don’t know what to do, give it to the teacher and she will waste it }  
2.   Walking with chemical’s { Use to hands while walking with chemical’s, don’t run with chemical’s }
3. Do not touch anything without teacher’s permission
4. Eye safety { If hurt your eyes, quickly wash your eyes for exactly 15 minutes with your eyes open  } 
5. Skin Safety { If chemical’s get onto your skin, wash that part for exactly 15 minutes } 
6. Smelling Fumes { Don’t smell any chemicals you do not know what they can do to your body, instead waft it towards your nose } 
7. Broken Glass { If broken class, let the teacher know and she/he will clean it up and do not use any chipped glass } 
8. Fire Safety { If fire, tell the teacher and she will put it out } 
9. Eating/Drinking { Do not eat or drink inside the lab } 
10.  Hand washing { After the lab lesson, always wash your hands for 10 seconds }

Today, with Miss Grant, we did Newshounds, Disinformation & Misinformation. Here is Disinformation about Billie Eilish, spreading lies about her on a social media account, called ” Billie Eilish Updates “, also trying to damage her reputation.

Disinformation means false information, & the owner of the account spread disinformation ( False ).

Today, we learn about about much of New Zealand Sea food gets exports out to other countries.
